THE FIGHTER (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

The Fighter—based on a true story—accesses the acting talents of Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg to present its story. All supporting cast did a perfect job to define this lifestyle and working through the ranks to fight for a better style of life. The portrayal is great. The movie deserves a watch by a sophisticated, adult audience.

? Yes? No? Maybe?

Yes. This is a realistic movie that works at the roughest level of life and delivers ‘on spot’ scenes of how to keep a family together despite all odds. It is an adult view only. Be aware that it is very raw but has a most unexpected conclusion. Terrific sports watch for the boxing enthusiast. Not a Rocky due to its grittiness, but definitely a do not miss film.

FATHER CHRISTMAS IS BACK (Video Release World-Wide 2021)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

Father Christmas is Back—Kelsey Grammar and John Cleese film—presents a sophisticated movie about moving on, closure, and letting past hurts go. It is gritty and works British-style humor to the max, but the conclusion delivers its own reward and is worth waiting for. It is a workable watch that has its own unique flavor and would be difficult to duplicate.

Yes. A cute, sweet, interpretation by Rex Harrison of character Doctor Dolittle, the man who could talk to animals. Harrison uses the same talk/sing technique for the musical parts that he used in My Fair Lady. His screen presence is indomitable. The movie works for its dollar and presents many fantasy scenes that are intriguing.

JOHN Q. (Theatrical Release USA 2002)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

John Q. seems an appeal for universal health care through a severe manipulation of audience emotion by creating a ‘what if’ scenario  and then supplies that feel good conclusion that seems meant to cinch the knot of how the audience should feel about universal health care. That apparent strong agenda takes it out of the realm of pure entertainment.  Before watching, it’s good to do some research on America’s health care options during the time this film was made. The movie, overall, is tense, engaging, and well-written.

Yes. This movie is good drama, especially for the audience who loves an inspiring film. Denzel Washington has most of the camera. The movie could be classified as a one-man role that, due to the level of emotion that needs to be pulled, would be an exhausting character to interpret well. Be assured that there is no lack in Washington's acting ability here.

Lean on Me—rare inspirational treasure—builds itself on the concept that one person can make a tremendous difference in the lives of many by expecting more and seeing potential not realized. WOW! CHERNOBYL ABYSS * (Theatrical Release Russia 2020)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Chernobyl Abyss builds itself around the Chernobyl nuclear power incident that made the Ukrainian town uninhabitable for over thirty years. The story can be hard to follow and a little incoherent at times with questions about why some actions are taking place. Emotional scenes do not really touch the heart and the movie comes off as cold which takes away from its quality. The English dubbing and subtitles are in place. If watching this on Amazon Prime, there is an option to choose Dolby Plus for sound quality. Choose the Dolby Plus for better ability to catch the complete dialogue.

Sing 2—one of those ‘gotta love it’ from its beginning to its end—has wonderful singing, terrific animation, and nonstop entertainment. The first Sing is wonderful. Sing 2 soars just as high in entertainment value. One notices that Sing 2 has a huge cast and yet, not one character is lost or undefined. DRUMLINE (Theatrical Release Germany 2004)

Drumline—fresh, creative, original—builds appreciation for orchestras who perform at sports events, the talent needed, the rigorous discipline, and the teamwork necessary to build an A-1 marching band. The movie packs a punch with its well-written, meaningful storyline and terrific conclusion. Watch for Nick Cannon’s terrific performance as well as Orlando Jones’ excellent interpretation of his acting role. One wonders why Jones is not in the public eye more often. He has 76 credits on IMDb, but one rarely hears about him in film or TV.

STOWAWAY (Theatrical Release Canada 2021)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Stowaway—interesting moral dilemma story—has good acting and good portrayal of its storyline. The audience, however, may feel no closure on the movie itself because it examines an ancient moral question of who shall live and who shall die in seemingly impossible situations and gives no resolution, no justification for the final decision. Perhaps a sequel could give the closure that is lacking here by showing the remaining members getting to Mars and completing their mission. This movie peaks interest and, then, leaves its audience hanging. Cinematography is good and if there are no other choices available, the movie works. Just be aware there is little conclusion.

Maybe. it is somewhat interesting and the acting and presentation are good. But better sci-fi films. that are much more enjoyable, are 2001: A Space Odyssey or Space Balls.  Star Wars is very rewatchable. Europa Report or Arrival are also good choices. Stowaway works more as a moral dilemma movie and gives the audience an opportunity to examine alternative courses of action in bad situations.

VICE (Theatrical Release USA 2018)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.5|5.0 Starsììì

Vice—beautifully written, presents well, and has good casting choices—plays heavily toward establishing ambiguity between fact and fiction. The movie establishes itself as a biographical film but then explores the Iraq war as a bid for oil rather than a pursuit of justice over the Twin Towers incident which takes the film outside its assigned borders of biographical dark comedy. Nevertheless, the entertainment value is there, and it is not a boring watch.

THE BOOK OF LIFE (Theatrical Release USA 2014)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

The Book of Life—good animation with vibrant color—drops its audience into its story without adequate preparation or setup. The concept is good, but the journey becomes difficult to follow if one is not familiar with Mexico’s mythological beliefs about the afterlife and its interplay with life in the real world. It is difficult to follow the characters and their relationships with one another because the story moves rapidly and does not allow much time to establish character differentiation or to understand the antagonists versus the protagonists. The film quickly establishes itself as a country-dependent piece of entertainment rather than the more desirable internationally appealing art piece. Do some research on Day of the Dead to enhance appreciation of this film.
