FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (Theatrical Release USA 2004)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Flight of the Phoenix remake movie has been highly re-written from its original 1965 storyline, but the basic story is in place. The original James Stewart movie has more charisma between the cast than this Dennis Quaid version. Giovanni Ribisi, chosen for the part of the airplane engineer, looks a great deal like the original casting for the same part…but the personality is not as strong nor as well-defined as the original casting. While the movie runs through its story at a fairly strong pace, it lacks that human element that the original movie embodied which makes it less relatable to its audience.

Maybe. If the audience desires to see the remake of the original 1965 classic Flight of the Phoenix, then this is the movie. Between the two movies, the original 1965 film performs at a higher level of entertainment.

THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (Theatrical Release USA 1965)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

The Flight of the Phoenix—golden, rare, do-not-miss movie—exceptional entertainment fare that is not perfect but the casting mix (James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Ernest Borgnine) work an unusual magic. The film keeps interest throughout and can be re-watched through the years. It’s an ageless story.

GARFIELD: A TAIL OF TWO KITTIES (Theatrical Release USA 2006)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties—Garfield’s second live action/animated movie—becomes worthy of mention even though it follows a familiar classic storyline and is completely predictable. Garfield’s personality plays well against duties pertaining to British royalty and contains some comedy with his unrestrained love of luxury. The movie serves as an easy-on-the-mind afternoon watch. Garfield fans will not be disappointed.

GAMERA VS JIGER (Theatrical Release USA 1970)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Gamera Vs Jiger—simple, cookie-cutter movie with a new monster—has a fair storyline reminiscent of Saturday morning 30-minute short films produced for children in the United States. The animatronics are good for the 1970s. The acting is good. The movie is easy to follow.

Maybe. Know that there are multiple fights that Gamera tackles in this series. If one watches the Gamera movies as a series, the stories may get old as they follow a similar formatting. However, the latter films seem more child oriented and present a bit softer approach that serve as fairly good adult/teen/child share movies and a good way to explore Japanese entertainment culture.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS (Theatrical Release USA 2014)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Exodus: Gods and Kings is not the classic 1956 movie The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston by any means. However, the special effects are outstanding and while the casting of Christian Bale as Moses takes away much of the majesty of the 1956 film, it integrates the heavenly and earthly interaction into a relatable intertwining of two very different elements. Be prepared to ‘see’ God as a child figure rather than the thunderous commanding voice. It is an interesting take on casting God. The story itself is well written and the portrayal is good.

CINDERELLA (Amazon Prime Release USA 2021)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Cinderella—good concept, fair singing and dancing—cannot compete with the animated and more traditional Cinderella stories. Pierce Brosnan is sophisticated enough to cast for the King, but does not pull some scenes well such as his attempt to ‘make up’ to the Queen. The movie seems to want to push a point rather than entertain and in that pushing loses creativity and freshness while working into an insincere, over-the-top brashness that has no underlying support structure. It is what it is and serves as a fill-in-some-spare-time flick.

The Cinderella story gets modernized with an independent Cinderella who desires career and non-reliance on the Prince’s fortune.

? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. It is not as well done as the classics My Fair Lady or Sound of Music. The casting doesn’t work for this movie and seems misplaced. When coupled with a storyline that does not flow and lacks heart, the film finishes with a lack of appeal due to its inability to connect to audience emotions.

NEZHA REBORN (Theatrical Release Japan 2021)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

NOTE: This is not intentionally a sequel film to the movie Nezha (2019).

Nezha Reborn—intriguing action scenes at the beginning of the story allow early audience engagement. Later action scenes fall flat. The story is well written. It engages the concept of the Monkey King and will be more enjoyable if international audiences do some research on the cultural concept of a Monkey King and his engagement with humans. But, this movie can be watched on the face value level because of its good special effects. The audience will comprehend the antagonist and protagonist struggle at street level. Overall, it performs as a high action animated movie that can hold the international teen/adult audience’s attention quite well.

GARFIELD: THE MOVIE (Theatrical Release USA 2004)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

Garfield: The Movie relies on the acting talents of Breckin Meyer (Jon) and voicing talents of Bill Murray (Garfield). The movie works straightforwardly with an orderly presentation. The live casting of Odie doesn’t seem to quite match the animated character Odie, but it works. This movie is the first live action film of two Garfield movies. W
illiam the Conqueror—documentary-styled short movie—places shallow investigation of William’s life throughout the film almost as if not enough research was done on this historical figure or the information is lacking. BOONIE BEARS: BLAST FROM THE PAST (Theatrical Release China 2019)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Boonie Bears: Blast from the Past—sixth film in a seven-film series—works in the okay film range. The movie does make a good try for heart but the presentation holds the heart back so that it cannot fully blossom. The timing is off center as in the length of time it takes to reveal the female wolf cub’s story. The names of some of the characters are difficult to track until mentioned at least twice and some of them are not mentioned at all, which seems disconcerting.

DIE HARD (Theatrical Release USA 1988)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Die Hard—not perfect, maybe not even great at times—but becomes a classic action movie from the beginning to ending scenes. The movie precisely times action scenes with human elements of family challenges so that audience involvement is demanded throughout. The Director John McTiernan has an outstanding script to work with, but he also manages to draw the impact out of each scene so that audience involvement is demanded. The movie earns its watch and the investment of time and money.
