Dragon Quest: Your Story—insanely great animation—cannot manage to draw the audience into caring about what happens to its characters. The storyline becomes, in the introduction of two love interests for the main character, the changing of roles for the princess, and its ‘weird’, mind-bending, unclear conclusion difficult to follow. The films’ characters have the potential to be very likeable, but the quantity of the characters makes the movie incomprehensible. The movie needs simplification with a rewrite of the script to reach its full potential.

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?
Maybe. For an audience who is highly involved in
the games on which this movie is based, there may be entertainment value. For
audiences outside that framework, try Kubo and the Two Strings for an
otherworldly adventure that is well-organized, crosses international borders well,
and is comprehensible upon first watch.
