THE LAST AIRBENDER (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

The Last Airbender
has all the earmarks for a great piece of entertainment but fails in its presentation and universal appeal. The acting works at below par. While M. Night Shymalan movies (like Signs and The Sixth Sense) sets expectations for great entertainment, this one does not make the grade.

THE MASK OF ZORRO (Theatrical Release USA 1998)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

The Mask of Zorro
—wonderful sword fighting—introduces Antonio Banderas as an outstanding Zorro figure. Casting chose Anthony Hopkins as the aging Zorro and Catherine Zeta-Jones as the female interest. This acting team turns the movie into one of the best Zorro movies made.

INSIDE OUT (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

Inside Out
—unusual story format—plays its scenes well; but it is not the best in its class. The movie seems to end bluntly as if it runs out of storyline. As a Pixar animation, children may like the brightly colored characters but may dis-appreciate the storyline which comes off as a psychological analysis rather than entertainment. The story has a serious mindset which does not lend itself much to laughter.

LA LA LAND (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

La La Land
lacks originality, has a weak storyline, and seems like a cookie-cutter movie. It’s touted as a musical; but when comparing it to classic musicals from the 1950s and 1960s, it fails to deliver. Dance routines seem copy-cat (like the bench routine) and there is no heart in it. The ending scenes seem repetitive and without the power to push this movie to home base. The movie fails to reach the heart.

STEP DOGS (Video Release USA 2013)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Step Dogs
seems to have strains/similarities of Home Alone running throughout its presentation except it lacks originality and runs as B-grade entertainment unlike Home Alone. The acting is fair as is the storyline. One leaves the film wondering what film makers were trying to do with this movie.

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO * (Theatrical Release Japan 1988)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

My Neighbor Totoro
—heart and sweetly simple storyline—defines Hayao Miyasaki’s work. His animation is soft on the eyes and easily watched partially due to the lovely coloration that still has that feel of hand-drawn. The storyline, as usual, crosses international borders due to its ability to catch universal emotions of love of family, concern for others, and mindful compassion. This is an excellent watch for the child/adult share. Another outstanding work for Hayao Miyazaki.

THE WORLD WE MAKE (Theatrical Release USA 2019)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.4|5.0 Starsììì

The World We Make
seems to be a story taken out of the 1960s with its basic message and seems irrelevant to the times we live in. While Caleb Castille has good onscreen charisma, this movie does not work well for him partially due to the supporting cast members' acting skills and partly due to the theme of the movie.

MORNING GLORY (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.7|5.0 Starsìììì

Morning Glory
—fresh and original—plays fast and hard. This adult film not only gives a peek into the stressful world of television news, but shows an interesting personal side to newscast relationships. For the modern-day, mature adult the movie is worth a watch. Nothing boring here due to the quick delivery. It takes engagement to watch this show. It’s not a ‘I can run to get popcorn and still pick up the storyline’ movie.

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

The Good Dinosaur
—lovable, sweet, and exceptionally family friendly—goes straight to the heart from its opening scene to its final scene. While not as impactful as other Pixar Studio films, this movie’s strict reliance on the theme of strangers helping strangers is welcome and well-received. Good family share film. THE LONGSHOTS (Theatrical Release USA 2008)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

The Longshots
—nice work by Ice Cube—bases itself on the true story of a young girl, Jasmine Plummer, who works to establish herself as a football player on a boys’ ball team. The script, well-written, shows, rather than tells that persistence, hard work, good training, and family support can go a long way toward establishing positive wins in life. PLANES (Theatrical Release USA 2013)

Planes
becomes, basically, a Cars movie with planes and lacks the excitement of Cars 1,2, and 3 combined. Not one of Disney’s best due to the lack of originality and the copy-cat feeling an audience may experience. Children, however, will love it and it is worth a watch.
