THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (Theatrical USA 1998)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

The Man in the Iron Mask
has multiple logical failures in the storyline and performs on the wishful thinking level. However, it has an all-star cast, the period costuming is well-done, and there is no lack of drama from its beginning to its ending.

Storyline

The Musketeers plot to replace a bad king with his imprisoned twin brother.

Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Randall Wallace for directing effort. Thank you to Executive Producers Alan Ladd Jr. and Frank Mancuso for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: King Louis/Phillippe (Leonardo DiCaprio), Aramis (Jeremy Irons), Athos (John Malkovich), Porthos (Gérard Depardieu), D’Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne), Queen Anne (Anne Parillaud), Christine (Judith Godrèche), Lieutenant Andre (Edward Atterton), Raoul (Peter Sarsgaard), and King’s Advisor (Hugh Laurie).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Yes. It’s interesting to see a remake of the 1923 film The Man in the Iron Mask and compare it with other remakes including a 1952 remake Lady in the Iron Mask that switches gender roles. This 1998 film version is the last remake of the Alexandre Dumas story as of 2018.
